(b)Reflective observation,18 in which the made experiences are reviewed and reflected,

(c)Abstract conceptualization,19 which contains cognitive processes like analysis, interpretation, cause-and-effect relationships, and even first ideas for improvement, and

(d)New active experimentation,20 i.e. a transfer of the recently developed concepts to a new situation based on the previous phases of the cycle, which leads again to new concrete experiences (see step a).21

With the realistic learning environment and the possibility to create an active learning experience, the learning factory is well-suited to implement this kind of experiential learning processes for manufacturing education. Figure 7.6 sketches the learning process as well as a possible implementation of this learning process inside learning factories. Other forms of learning in engineering education that allow competency development through experiential learning processes are simulations, learning in projects, and case studies, which are also well-suited to be combined in one course with further active learning approaches.22
